Hoop Mania Success!
At Boundless City, we believe that urban development must come from within to truly benefit the community and build inclusive, unique cities. Our Hoop Mania 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament this past Saturday was one of our best examples of this thus far.
Hoop Mania was 100% organised by community members who regularly play basketball at Ernest Oppenheimer Park, in the centre of Johannesburg’s CBD. This fantastic team included Ken “Ella” Mazowa, Marks “Gunz” Mhlanga, Pule Mathebula, Tupy “Coach” Masengana, Toto Kasandi, Tumi “Jay1” Monaheng, and myself, as well as referees Denzel, Moses, and Allen.

The participating teams came from all over Johannesburg, and the winning team BANALALA (which means 'they are sleeping' in Swahili) won Champion t-shirts and a team prize of R 2000. An awesome sound set-up, old school hip hop, and enthusiastic MC-ing kept the energy up all day.If you missed it, don’t worry! Our next tournament is on the 27th of April, and Hoop Mania will take place every last Saturday of the month this year. A big thanks goes to our sponsors, the Retail Improvement District (RID). RID manages the park and the area around the park. We are very appreciative of their support for community-based initiatives such as this one, and look forward to more success!

Look out for next week’s Boundless Wednesday, which will be posted from Accra, Ghana!
